Top Strategies to Excel in AUDL Tryouts: Insights from an AlleyCats Player

Cam making an incredible catch

As an AUDL player, one of the most frequent questions I encounter is, “What does it take to make an AUDL team?” With the growing popularity of ultimate frisbee in Indianapolis and beyond, securing a spot on a team like the AlleyCats has become increasingly competitive.

1. Prioritize Your Fitness

Start by showing up in peak physical condition. While you don't need to be in mid-season form, being able to compete throughout the tryout period is crucial. This typically spans a weekend and involves 4-6 hours of intense frisbee. Remember, stamina and endurance can set you apart from the crowd.

2. Mastery Over the Disc

Your approach to handling the disc is vital. High-risk throws often lead to quick dismissals. Instead, focus on consistently completing accurate and 'safe' passes. This strategy not only reduces turnovers but also demonstrates your reliability and skill, essential qualities for any AUDL team member.

3. Emphasize Defense

A relentless focus on defense can be your ticket to the roster. Being consistently close to your matchup and showing eagerness to take on challenges are traits that coaches look for. Interestingly, many AUDL stars like Levi Jacobs and Rick Gross began on the defensive line before transitioning to offense. This shows the value and potential growth that a strong defensive play offers.

While there are no guaranteed spots in AUDL teams, adhering to these guidelines significantly enhances your chances. Remember, it's about showcasing your skills, strategy, and commitment. Good luck, and hopefully, we'll meet on the field soon!
